Does Sarah Palin Speak in Tongues?

BY JOHN FEA

We know she is an Alaskan reformer. We know she is pro-life. We know she was a beauty queen and basketball star. We know she eats moose burgers. But does Sarah Palin speak in tongues?

According to some reports, Palin attends church at the Juneau Christian Center, a congregation affiliated with the Assembly of God. As many of you know, the Assembly of God is the largest pentecostal denomination in the world. It is known for speaking in tongues, healing, and an emotional and contemporary style of worship with a lot of hand-raising.

Palin appears to have grown up pentecostal or at least attended a local Assembly of God Church (Wasilla Assembly of God Church) during her junior high school years.

NOTE: In an interview with Time Magazine, Palin said she was born and baptized Catholic but now attends a "non-denominational Bible Church." (I am sure this will all be cleared up shortly).

If Palin is indeed a pentecostal, I am sure the pundits will compare her to two other noteworthy members of the Assembly of God who were also involved in Republican politics: Bush's Attorney General, John Ashcroft and Reagan's Secretary of the Interior, James Watt.

I am eager to hear what Matt Sutton and Randall Stephens, our "resident" pentecostsal experts, have to say about all this.

I have posted a longer version of this post at The Way of Improvement Leads Home.

We can only hope! Tongues speaking is good for business (Randall and my business).

I have to admit that I was totally stoked when I saw that she was an evangelical and a pentecostal. As a card-carrying democrat and a self-described Protestant liberal, I may be wishing against my own interests here. (Help me make sense of this, Thomas Frank). Let's just say that for me the Nov contest is a win win, sort of... Now, if only John Hagee can become the sec of state and James Dobson the sec of Health and Human Services!

Note also that, to my knowledge, Ashcroft was pretty cagey about the particulars of his Assemblies of God/pentecostal beliefs. I have no knowledge of him ever making predictions of or even allusions to the premill return of Jesus or talking about speaking in tongues. Best hold one's tongue on that one. One word about that from Palin and Jon Stewart would have a field day!

Why did you choose that picture? Are you trying to subtley reflect your opinion about pentecostals?

Anonymous: Is the picture lying? Is this some kind of CGI trick?

I look forward to Matt's interpretations of this!

Would Aimee be proud?!

And yes, this could be the female version of John Ashcroft -- heaven help us! Will lady justice be draped again?

Pastor Bob:

If Palin is a "second coming" of John Ashcroft, does that mean we can all look forward to another version of, "Let the Mighty Eagle Soar?"

Here's an awesome take on Ashcroft's masterful song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sMDG_bpBAk&feature=related

It brings to mind the backward masking scares of anti-rockers and anti-cultists in the 1970s!!!

Haha! That is great! The best part was, "See our foot sail out of her ass." Priceless.

She may speak in tongues, but it sounds like she is still unsure about what the V.P. does. Take a look:

I will not be surprised to learn that she is a tongue-speaker. We already know that she wants to teach creationism in schools, thinks global warming is not caused by humans, wants to criminalize abortions in cases of rape, and is obsessed with "saving marriage." Being a tongue-speaker will only complete the (very scary) puzzle.

But to be fair, I am impressed that she was mayor of a town of 6,000. Those of us who grew up in small towns understand what a serious job that is! :) :)

Don't forget that the Chief of Staff of the DNC and the CEO of the Democratic National Convention Committee, Leah Daughtry, is also a "tongue speaker." I don't think it's very responsible to try to read much into somebody's life or politics simply because they are Pentecostal or speak in tongues.

I am a thirty-something mom of a 2-year old, a youth pastor's wife at a non-denominational church (one of America's most innovative in 2006 & 2007) and I own my own small business. I am not a weirdo. God has given me favor with both the rich and poor alike, the ones with social influence and those without. I speak in tongues in my own quiet prayer time...God has used that on many occasions when He has laid it on my heart to pray for protection of various people and in other cases when I really don't know what or how to pray. It's clearly talked about in the Bible in Acts (maybe not the way it's depicted on TV sometimes), but it IS nonetheless a gift of the Holy Spirit, just as there are other gifts of the Spirit. It is the most powerful form of prayer, because the Bible says that the Spirit understands the utterances even when we may not. How awesome it would be to have someone who has this particular gift of the Holy Spirit in such a high office in our nation, praying for wisdom and direction on policies and other important decisions as the Vice-President of the United States.

The Assembly of God not only speaks in tongues, heals etc. It also does exorcisms. Example: The case of a teenage girl beaten up by an A/G parish for two days in Fort Worth. The church was fined for damages, but the Texas State Court declared the beating legal, based on freedom of religion. The girl's family want to take it to Supreme Court, but with Palin in the White House, they won't have a chance. A/G also believes that "secular humanists" are agents of Satan and gradually taking over the world. I you don't believe it, visit the A/G website: That's their official doctrine. They may believe in a lot of crazy things, but this is outright dangerous.
