But, good question! Those particular images are housed in the special collections of my institution. On that project, we worked with the archivist and other library staff. My students scanned the archival photographs (and got fun lessons in photoshop and metadata!) and so those particular digital files were created in our classroom. It was some of the funnest, collaborative teaching I've ever done. And I just completed a similar project with students and my colleagues in the library this past fall semester. esclarkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02794977716560232353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37589721331585843.post-43279861478654747482017-11-30T09:07:47.338-07:002017-11-30T09:07:47.338-07:00Fascinatingly mundane, Charlie. You ask, "How migh...Thanks for this good post. You ask, "How might Andrew's wife have responded to Grimke's 'Appeal'"? My guess is that she likely would have responded the way that Angelina Grimke's own mother, a lifelong slaveowner, did to her daughter's forceful, Biblically-based arguments. Mrs. Grimke rejected Angelina's personal pleas to free her slaves. They debated the question in the year before Angelina moved north to Philadelphia, five years before Angelina joined the Philadelphia Female Antislavery Society, and six years before she wrote her first "Appeal." Mrs. Grimke rejected Angelina's argument that her soul, upon her death, was going to hell for owning slaves. In Mrs. Grimke's view (as in her husband's, though he had died some years before, leaving her the legal slaveowner), slaves were of an inferior race who possessed no right to liberty. In my forthcoming book about the Grimke sisters, to be published by Farrar, Straus, Giroux in 2020, I'll write more about this. I personally find the primary source and digital recommendations that each article includes absolutely invaluable. They're also great teaching tools - I can see assigning them to my advanced undergrads before they start their capstone research, for example (and, admittedly, I assigned my entry to the students in my religion and politics capstone this semester). It sparked a lot of really great discussion from students. Some loved Covington, others pushed back against him, but all of them found the book really readable and engaging. In an honors version of the course we followed up with Orsi's essay "Snakes Alive!" which gave them a lot more food for thought. esclarkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02794977716560232353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37589721331585843.post-44306149450466838112017-09-02T09:56:34.214-06:002017-09-02T09:56:34.214-06:00Thanks for your reflection Melanie.
