Based on my experiences with Catholics in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America, I'll only say here that I think the impact of such Vatican teachings on local parishes is very diverse--ranging from sheepish dismissal to awestruck reverence. Personally, I'm most invested in understanding how such bioethical normalization--whatever the religiosity or secularity of the source--responds to and reshapes literary and cinematic narrative, and by extension, popular opinion and public policy. In that sense, I think the Vatican's voice is quite amplified, as few groups match its platform for and commitment to such bioethical pronouncements.

And thanks, Ed, for that vote of supreme confidence. ;)Jenn/Evhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14665561356266424742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37589721331585843.post-44169679342457168552009-03-24T15:33:00.000-06:002009-03-24T15:33:00.000-06:00anything that can save us from the fate of 'Idiocr...anything that can save us from the fate of 'Idiocracy' (the movie) is probably a good thing. I was wondering if you have any insight into the "trickle down" effect of a Vatican document like Dignitas Personae in its practical application among Catholics around the world? In other words, how do the complex, if not cryptic ideas of Dignitas Personae reach Catholics in Saint-You-Name-The-Nun Parish in Omaha, Nebraska, or Luanda, Angola? There seems to me to be a tendency among proponents and detractors in the United States and Europe to argue over such matters within a culture war discourse. But what about the vast majority of people who know nothing of Dignitas Personae and only the rudiments of the larger ethical/theological argument over "life"?

Of course, they could always read our blog!
