She called me to ask, "So are you still going to be able to finish your degree now that Dr. Harvey is dead?" I was taken back at first, but quickly realized who she was talking about. She then concluded with, "I sure hope they don't replace him with some liberal historian from California."

Hmmmmmmmmm.....Brad Harthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17669677047039491864noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37589721331585843.post-87350908983324683742009-03-05T08:23:00.000-07:002009-03-05T08:23:00.000-07:00Thanks for this post. I do think Gore Vidal put a fine point on it when he took Updike to task for supporting the Vietnam war. If I recall, Vidal's complaint is that Updike is kind of, well, sympathetic to authority.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37589721331585843.post-9379069491830934262009-03-05T07:44:00.000-07:002009-03-05T07:44:00.000-07:00I guess now that he's passed I won't be framing co...I guess now that he's passed I won't be framing conversations about this blog with "No, not that Paul Harvey."DEGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12172696007825023445noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37589721331585843.post-82313278857856210492009-03-04T17:57:00.000-07:002009-03-04T17:57:00.000-07:00is that the rest of the story?is that the rest of the story?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37589721331585843.post-53653073511266994572009-03-04T15:13:00.000-07:002009-03-04T15:13:00.000-07:00Although Updike took me to task for my "sociologic...Although Updike took me to task for my "sociological thrust" (which is more of an insult to sociologists than to me); for my "copious acknowledgments" (which appear on pages 337-339 of the book for gawd's sake); and for acknowledging the impact of Foursquare on my grandmother's life, the New Yorker did a hell of a cartoon of Aimee Semple McPherson!

Paul, I am glad that you are not dead.
