Of the Passing of the First Born

Paul Harvey

"The Word was made flesh, but then we were left with words."

If you read nothing else this week, or this month, I hope you'll take a moment to read this beautiful short reflection by my friend and our resident genius Edward J. Blum, on the first anniversary of his son Elijah's passing. Elijah lived December 12, 2010, to August 30, 2011, and his death coincided with the completion of the final manuscript for our book The Color of Christ: The Son of God and the Saga of Race in America. Most here will recognize the title, which comes from one of W. E. B. DuBois's essays in Souls of Black Folk, discussed at much greater length in Ed's book W. E. B. DuBois: American Prophet.
